55 It was never funny so why are you all laughing?
So first of all, I need to vent a little about my history class and what happened when we had a discussion about the atomic bombs being dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima at the end of World War II.
What happened was that someone in my class mentioned a guy- Tsutomu Yamaguchi- who survived both bombs; except that person said it more like Yamaguchi was the unluckiest person ever, considering he went one place that got hit by a bomb and then went somewhere else and got hit again.
The class laughed.
I admit, I would have too. But when I was researching the subject a little the day before, I realized that it isn’t funny. There are some things that I think shouldn’t be taken lightly.
I pointed out to the class that it wasn’t funny. Because imagine going out of town for work (which is what happened to Yamaguchi) and while you’re there, a bomb is dropped. Imagine seeing a bomb so huge you can barely understand it. Imagine hearing about it and watching people die.
Imagine going home, thinking you’re ok, back to your home town, so shaken you can barely think straight.
Imagine a day later having to see people die again. Imagine going out to look for your family and getting poisoned by the radiation you don’t even know is there.
Imagine years from that moment, when people hear about what happened and laugh about it.
I get that it wasn’t your country and you weren’t there and it was years ago, but please do not laugh because you’ve forgotten about the lives taken by a bomb so huge, the country that got hit by it vowed to never allow atomic weapons on its land again.
There was silence in that class then.
And then again, I come here, on this website, and I see someone make a joke about slavery. ‘To join the black parade’ with a picture of a couple of black slaves tied together, being forced to walk in a procession. It’s funny, yeah, to think of those people being taken off to work on plantations and fields for nothing, to think of later when they are freed that they and their children will die because of the colour of their skin, to think that even now they are still being killed because of it, somewhere in this world they are still dying?
Did you think of the people you were hurting when you made that stupid post? Did you think of the people who worked so hard to get me here, with the rights that I have right now to tell you not to joke about it?
Yeah, it was just a joke. But for FUCK sake, THINK before you make a joke like that. Just think a little.
I might be going a little over the top with this, but it’s what I think. Same goes for racist slurs. ‘Nigger’ is not funny and it never was. Stop using it just because everyone else is. Are you so much of a sheep that you think it’s ok to use it because of everyone else? You realize ‘faggot’ is a bad word, why not this?
